For everyone whose wondering, factory specs on gear/drive ratios for
Beetles and SB's are:

                         1st 2nd 3rd 4th Final
1954-1960 3.6 1.88 1.23 .82 4.4
1961-1966 3.8 2.06 1.32 .89 4.375
1967-1969 " " 1.26 " 4.125
1970 " " " " 4.375
71-72+SB " " " " 4.125
73-75+SB 3.78 " " .93 3.875

.82 x 4.4 = 3.61 (1954-1960)
.89 x 4.375 = 3.89 (61-66,1970)
.89 x 4.125 = 3.67 (67-69, 71-72)
.93 x 3.875 = 3.60 (73-75)

So...older and newer Bugs (and SB's) go faster in 4th at a given rpm,
67-69's go less fast, with 61-66's even slower. Those of us who've
had many different years knew this from how they drove, but numbers
confirm it.

Anyone volunteer to do the math on 1st so we can figure which one is
faster off the line for a given torque curve and totla vehicle weight?

My Clymer(aaugh!) manual disagrees with your final for '70. It says
4.125:1. That could just be the fact that it's a Clymer manual.;-)

I wonder about '70 too. Either a misprint or some guy in inventory
control said "hey, we've still got a bunch of the old rings in
stock...let's use 'em." It was also the year they moved to a 85.5mm
bore, wasn't it? Maybe it had something to do with the torque curve
that resulted.
